No offense taken Barry. We've been a Johnsonite distributor longer than we've been with Mannington.

I’m giving up stretch in carpet this summer, too hard on you for too little of a reward. When I thnk of what ai dislike about flooring, most things are carpet related, heavy lifting/furniture moving and so on...

Not a bad idea. The only people that are making money doing stretch in are the hacks. They can cut corners (and get away with it) then slap it in. Gun & run, double cutters, no seam sealing...exc
    Sad but true.

I know I might take a financial hit, but my body is a finite resource and I’d rather use it on the most valuable installs. Hauling in big rolls of carpet will make an old man out of a young one in a hurry

Take that part out Kyle, I just hire movers to haul it in. I have a couple for $50 they will come anytime I call. I would like to not do it also but still have to.

I had a helper, problem is that with helper you get stuck doing all of the big carpet jobs. And the little ones you make no money on. Meanwhile they’re giving away vinyl plank jobs to any warm body and that pays at least 30% better on average

That’s how you know you will stay busy doing vinyl plank. You’re missing out on the gravy train right now because you keep saying yes to the biscuits.

There's more work than I can handle for about 9 months a year around here, I'm trying to be choosier about that and hopefully I'm not making a huge mistake. Either way, people are so desperate for a carpet installer that I could walk right back into it if I have to. I figure, even if I work about 25% less I'll still make a comparable income.

Now, how would this issue be addressed by those at the top of the industry? Crickets, that’s how. You get the top big dogs(you know the ones writing articles in the trade magazines trying to sucker new blood in the trade) to reply to this and I’ll donate 100$ to Jim of course to further our goals. It simply does not pay to work so hard and get paid so little.

I’m not afraid of the work, but making less money to do harder work just doesn’t equal good decision making in my book! By my reckoning, in about 15 years there’s gonna be a massive carpet installer shortage while there are plenty of tile installers because that’s where the money is now

The guys doing tile up here are hacks keeping the good tile guys busy replacing all that they did. We had some new tile installers moving here from Bozeman looking for work in the store yesterday. I said if you can't find tile work you can do carpet as their needed up here. Not going to happen.

we have about 75% high quality tile installers with a couple of culls that somehow keep getting work! So much high end shower work around the lake keeps the guys busy.

I learned a few things reading Floor Covering Installer today, or maybe just reaffirming. Who gets this publication? I usually set all of them aside to one day read but that day never comes. So I got it today and started reading it. Namba’s Sons Tools batteries caught fire in a bag burning up his truck, that was interesting. My fear about charging my scraper in a trailer full of tools. Spray Lock 327 when concrete is placed provides permanent moisture migration prevention. A meter embedded in a piece of hardwood for humidity levels alerting smartphone. Few other things but most importantly got it read it. Tile magazine and Floor Trends just received may have to wait.
