Roger wanted to as a good joke, but I stopped him.
Hey ! I think Industry Leaders, like you Jim need access, free of charge, like reporters do.
PS> sorry about the tire jinx, send me the bill
Dont forget some group photos!
Well we are now sitting on the 56th floor of Trump hotel looking over all the lights of the strip
Here is one of our bathroom and one of the strip
Kind of hard to do. Nothing has been set when where or a time to meet up.
So far, Mike, there hasn't been any opportunities for group photos. I don't know how I managed to forget to ask someone to take a shot of Nate and I last night. But I did ask people to take pictures of me and a few people I spoke with today. I missed out on getting some pictures of me with Jim & Jane Walker. Had a nice chat with them, but forgot the photo op.
Jon, nice room. Can we get some breakfast together in the morning? Meet at the Pyramid Cafe in the Luxor? Maybe about 9 or 10ish? Or anywhere you say that I can get to. How about anyone else?
I got up early this morning, but didn't get out of my room until about 9:30. Went to breakfast, then to the event. Got stopped at the main entrance by security and told I "can't bring that thing in here." I smiled and said, sure I can, it's ADA compliant and I called ahead to make sure. I gave him the email I printed out from the Operations Manager, who he didn't seem to know and he made a radio call. He had the walkie-talkie to his face and was trying to be private by moving away from me, but the speaker was on (prob'ly 'cause it was so loud in there) and I could hear everything. He told some other guy I had permission, but I was on "one a them Seg-a-ways," then read part of the email and the other guy said to hold on. Then a female voice, sounding quite authoritative, asked for the name on the ticket. He told her Jim McClain and before he even finished saying McClain, she said a little bit louder, "he's clear, let him through." All of a sudden the security guy is as friendly as your local grocer. He wished me a good day and for the rest of the day, all the security guys were very cool and friendly. I even joked about having them call upstairs to clear a path, 'cause here I come full speed.
The event was pretty crowded. I got around fine and had a lot of people ask me the standard questions about where I got it and how much did it cost. I made it over to the CFI area and hung out there a bit. I tried mostly to make contact with organizations involved in training and media organizations like Floor Covering Weekly and others. I spoke with a lady (I have everyone's cards in my bag across the room - please don't ask me to get them) at FCW and hope to maybe get a little free press for TFP. Saw the Personna exhibit and chatted them up. The guy in the picture said he would like to help us with a give-away soon. The International Concrete Repair Institute was having a class, but we talked a little and I hope he will help us deliver training and certification info to all our TFP members and visitors. Ken, of FCITS, is a member here and I had a nice visit with him. He has been great about spreading the TFP joy to others and has brought us a number of members in the past.
About 1:30 or so, I was getting pretty tired, so I went back to my room. My portable o2 concentrator batteries were getting a little low (the Seg bats were doing remarkably well), so I put on the not-so-portable concentrator in the room while the portable was charging and I took a long nap. It was a short day for me at Surfaces, but I think it was productive.
Took myself to an early dinner at an Italian place - really good meal - and brought dessert back to the room. Don't tell anyone I stole the big glass for my milk instead of using a little plastic cup - didn't want to spill any of the precious nectar of the cows gliding back to my room. I also did a little window shopping and cruised through the casinos. I'm gonna stay in the rest of the night and watch real TV though. This is way more excitement than I'm used to.
As I said, I am at your disposal. Name the time and place and I will do everything I can to be there. I missed seeing you today and hope we can meet up tomorrow. Maybe you can meet for breakfast? You got my phone number, so gimme a call when you can. Heck, I might even be up to going out tonight - it's only 9:30 and I'm feeling pretty good and my batteries are charged. Long as I can get a cola drink, coffee or something, I'm fine.
Anybody who has been to the show maybe able to work out a good place to meet as we don't know the setup of the show as the last time we came was about 5 years ago but we will be there in the morning
Checked out that Go phone and it will cost $50 then a phone card and then the phone will not work in NZ so its cheaper to use my phone. I have Jims number so I will ring him to find out if anybody has arranged anything
Looks like Jim and I were typing at the same time
It would probually be better for us to meet at the show Jim as unsure when we will wake up. Left Santiago at 11.30pm last night and didn't get much sleep on the plane
Jim I was in the CFI area almost all day, ( eccept when I went to speak ) you must have came by at that time.I will be in the CFI area most of the day again so if everyone wants to come by at 9: 30 am we can get the group shot.
Yes is Peter giving the class? If anyone is interested, in California, the guys we wrok with for testing also work for ICRI and can get you certified. (if in California) However, I object to installers doing their own testing. Fox watching the hen house.
Also people should know Wagner Meters usually posts their surfaces talk on Youtube.
Ok How about we meet outsie the main entrance at noon. Can't do breakfast.
Roland and I were typing at the same time. Sorry 9:30 won't work for me.
Okay with me but I will still see if I can find Jim
We also have another couple of guys from NZ that i should find at some stage
Unless Rock replies back before, I'll make it to the CFI area at 9:30am. I will also be at the main entrance (first floor, right?) at noon. I'm sure I won't be hard to spot.
Call any time, Jon. We can meet up wherever you want.
Hey I understand about the group picture , enjoy, learn and network.
I didn't catch up to Roland last year.
Those google glasses would be cool for shows like this, though they would be banned also.
You want group pictures?
I got yer group pictures right here.
First pic is of Jim Walker, myself, Jane Walker, Shirley & Jon Scanlan and Roland Thompson.
Next picture is Dave Garden, me, Roland, Danny Sherman and [Rock, please tell us who this is] giving Tim Providence a hard time during his wood adhesive demonstration. Yeah, I was there just to disrupt classes and certifications.
Third pic is of me and Nate Hall. Thanks for dinner the other night Nate.
For the fourth picture, it was going to be just me and our ProInstaller Magazine editor, Dan Lipman, who some of you may remember from his days at FCI. But then I bumped into Roger Huff, one of our TFP members. Then one of my fellow founding members of the Reno area CFI chapter walked by, so I grabbed him for the shot too. So, it's Curtis, me, Roger and Dan.
Dan convinced me it would be cool if I were to wear the ProInstaller Mag hat over my real hat (yes, that's my story and I'm sticking to it, Dan). I forgot all about it and stopped by the Bullet Tools booth, where I was introduced to the team leader at Surfaces, Jim (sorry didn't get his last name) and I was able to thank him in person for the support of a couple of tool give-aways we've had here in the past. He and I had a nice conversation and he hooked me up with the marketing director so she and I can come up with another give-away soon. It wasn't until I started processing these pictures that I discovered that I still had that goofy double-hat thing goin' on. Damn you Dan! Anyway, that's a shot of me and Jim, of Bullet Tools.
I was feeling a little tired, so I sat down to wait for the meet-up with Daris, Jon and whoever. These guys in zoot suits came by and chatted me up about my Segway. I asked why they were in costume, but didn't get a straight answer except maybe they just celebrate Surfaces that way. I liked it. I don't know their names, but they suggested a picture, so there it is.
The last picture is of Nate, Jon and myself. Shirley took the shot while we waited for Daris to show up at HIS preferred meeting spot, the main entrance. He was a no-show. I was worried that something was wrong with his wife, but a little birdie told me he just was on the wrong floor waiting on us.
I napped again while my batteries charged up and went back to the event. I feel like this was an even more productive day than yesterday and even more fun too. Too bad it all ends tomorrow. I don't know if I will make any of the show tomorrow because I have to pack up all my crap and get checked out of my room. I may just hit the road and see how close I can get to home.
Before I close this out tonight, I want to say thanks again to all of you who donated to send me down here. I was over at the CFI area again this afternoon and Roland slipped me a nice large bill for those expenses I wasn't prepared for, a nice meal, etc. Very generous of you Rock, and the rest of you that helped make this a pretty exciting start to my 2014. Thank you all.
Too cool Jim
I'm waiting for my pro installer mag , they have good info, bullet tools are the best(magnum of course)
I bet Nate has one of those suits.
Roland sure is top notch. All be safe.
It was good to catch up with you guys again Its a pity we missed Daris and Karen as we have meet them each year for about as long as I can remember coming to Surfaces
If anybody is around today I am meeting up with another couple of people from NZ at 10 am outside Subway in the food court
You guys haven't aged a bit in 7 years! Other than it looks like Nate lost a hair or 2. LOL Jim, I talked to John at Vortex Applied Coatings and he isn't there, a couple of salesman are. If you see there booth, you might put a plug in there about starting a Vortex forum for dealers. John said you could call him sometime about it. I've been wanting that for us dealers for years.
I was at the main entrance from 11:50 until 12:20!!!!
YOU WERE THE NO SHOW!!!
I don't know how you could have missed me, Daris. I was sitting inside the front door of the exhibit hall for about 10 minutes, starting at quarter to noon, then went out in front of the hall for 15 minutes. Then I glided over to the main entrance off the stone tile entry to the convention center at the top of the slope, where I met Nate and Jon and we waited until about 12:30.
It is a large area though. Where is the main entrance for you? Sorry I missed you.
