Ever since I lost the ecore lines, I only go to surfaces when it intersects with world of concrete.

I believe segways are against LVCC rules. But Surfaces is at Mandalay Bay so perhaps you will have luck.

IF you have success using a segway let me know by PM please. I have a family member who would probably go to these shows if he could ride a segway.

I use a Segway as a mobility aide. Because of lung disease, I can't walk very far anymore. My use is defined in the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) as an EPAMD (Electronic Personal Assistive Mobility Device) and, since 2010, the name Segway has been given as an example of an EPAMD. It is a toy for many people and I understand it being barred from most venues and commercial establishments.

The only requirement is that the user be disabled, but even that is a slippery slope for businesses. They can't ask what your disability is. There are a number of issues in the ADA that protect the disabled and most people in law enforcement/security have never read the law. It's a federal law. I have heard some horror stories from other Segway users who have been denied ADA access. Unfortunately, some businesses have the fear factor in their favor - Seg users don't want to argue with cops/security and they can't afford attorneys to fight violations of federal law.

I was at the mercy of security at Surfaces 2007. It was worse because the ADA didn't mention Segway (there is no actual list of approved devices), so I couldn't prove to security that a Segway was an EPAMD and they refused to read the portions of the ADA I carry with me (the whole ADA is about as thick as a phonebook). In 2012, I had the Operations Manager on my side, just as I do this year. I still had some difficulty with one security guy in particular, but I was able to use my Seg. I am confident I will have even less trouble this year.

For those who aren't officially disabled (a doctor has to fill out a form you give to your motor vehicle department in exchange for a certificate and special placard or license plates), Surfaces rents 3/4-wheeled scooters - at least they used to. Now the Surfaces website says no scooters allowed. Maybe that's just so they can rent their own.

Ah ok there has been a change then. It is named now. Good.

Super informative. Thank you. This will help someone important to me.

BTW - ever thought about adding an ADA section on the website? I can't say how many ADA issues I get in at schools. Finding an installer / someone to cut ADA pemko ramps & doors is IMPOSSIBLE and CRAZY expensive

Hmm, if only there was somebody who was computer savy who had access to many installers...that guy could put a directory online perhaps so others could use it for a small fee...HMMM INDEED! (food form thought, bon appetite Jim)

We have a health and safety forum and we have a business directory. Anyone can discuss accessibility issues and any pro can have a free business listing. Spread the word. ;) We don't charge for any information here, and won't as long as I am around. :ohno:

    My trip begins today

I am just about finished packing. I had a good night's sleep. After this post, I am loading up the car and heading out. Thanks again, those of you who made this trip possible. My first stop is a restaurant for breakfast. Yes, I know the picture shows it's about 11-ish in the morning. But my hours are weird. Got to bed about 3am last night, which is early for me.

See you again along my trip.

    320 miles later...

I'm lounging in my room in Tonopah, NV. Found a clean motel with wifi and a nice desk clerk that helped me bring everything in from my car. I made a few stops along the way. It wasn't a great start though and I was beginning to wonder why bad things happen to good people like me. :D

The first thing I do when I get settled in my room is turn on the old laptop and start reading TFP messages. Of course, I see your reply, Mike, and the answer starts revealing itself.

    surfaces2014-003.jpg surfaces2014-004.jpg

So, it must be your fault...

My first stop and I turned the corner to park the car as close as I could to the door of the restaurant and I somehow got the rear tire up on the sidewalk - them damn handicap cuts in the sidewalk - and it falls off the curb and breaks my fancy winter wheel covers.

I shrug it off and have a nice breakfast with an old friend I haven't seen in a while. Just as I'm leaving, we shake hands and then he says, oh, I prob'ly should have told you earlier, I got this horrible bronchial bug.

I couldn't put enough hand sanitizer on.

So, I'm on my way. Maybe 40 or so miles from home it dawns on me... I forgot my belts. I spend most of my time in sweats, so I wasn't thinking about the belts when I ironed my pants and packed them last night. Damn, damn, damn!

Reno is 80 miles from home and on the way, so I first stop to get a free car wash (buy 10, get one free - took me nearly a year), then to Target to see if I can get caught up in the credit card drama. Found a reversible belt for cheap and hit the road again.

There's this Paiute reservation out in the middle of nowhere (Schuez, NV) along the way and I see a lighted sign that says "Cafe." It must be time for lunch (it was 5:30pm), so I pulled in. BEST RIBS EVER! Oh, and I think what made the experience even better was the people in that little cafe. Greeted warmly right off by a young man and the owner's daughter and I struck up a conversation with Kristy, one of the owners that made me forget all about a broken tire and wayward belts. Her husband, Jim, and another guy were cooking and everyone was cheerful and generous. I felt like it was the local hangout and I fit right in.

So here's a shout-out to Jim & Kristy Lott, at the Wakky Warrens Café, and the rest of their tribe. If anyone finds themselves on 95E between Fernly and Tonopah, stop to eat and enjoy these folks' company for a spell.

Now for some real TV. I don't even remember what it's like anymore. I hope something good is on.

    'Til next time...

Well we are now at Santiago and sitting at a table waiting for breakfast. Nothing is happening then realised we are not on the ship anymore. You gotta get things yourself. The room is smaller than the ships cabin and se have to pack again to catch a plane at 11 30 pm for our first leg to Vegas of a 8.50 flight to Mexico wait 5 hours then onto Vegas
Has anyone decided where are meeting on the second day of the show? Phoning is not really an option for me due to the cost. My phone calls go to NZ and back. We also have to find our way around the show to find our bearings.
Looking forward to meeting you guys who talk with that funny accent :D

Grab yourself a go-phone with a hundred or so prepaid minutes, Jon.

I like the dinner meeting. It won't interfere with educational seminars.

Good morning Vegas!!:DI'm at the Lux and going to breakfast!

I'll be at the Luxor too. Hope I don't get there too early to check in. I couldn't sleep and it's just past 6:30am here in Tonopah. I got a few hours, but the pillows are too soft and I felt like I was tilted up on my head. My own bed has a big wedge that props me up 6" so my lungs don't gurgle. Sleeping on a flat bed is strange now.

Well, checkout's not until 11am, so I'll try to get a couple more hours before heading out. That should get me to the Lux at an appropriate hour.

Hey Jon, Kevin's got a great idea about that pre-paid phone. I don't know Vegas enough to be able to say where to meet when. Call me and tell me where to go and I'll get there. 530-518-0023 Got that Nate? :)

PS: yes, I made that bed. no, I didn't weave the baskets. ;)

Still in my room, had to lace up the new Chuck Taylors I bought for the trip. I can't wait breakfast for you but my first class is social media boot camp. I suspect I'll see you there, Jim

No, couldn't afford any classes. I did take that (or a similar) class last time though. I won't in Vegas until tonight. Still a lot of miles to drive from here. Leaving in a few minutes.

Made it to the Luxor and during check-in, my Paypal card was declined. I thought you guys decided to take all yer money away. But it turns out Paypal was just trying to protect me. They know I live in Quincy and here's someone trying to blow more than 200 bucks in Vegas using my card. So they blocked it. When the guy suggested I call the number on the card I reminded him this was Paypal. You don't get to talk to a real human at Paypal.

Boy was I wrong. When I got to my room (I had to use another card that doesn't care if I go over limit because then they can charge me an arm and a leg to fix it), I went to the Paypal site and discovered you guys didn't take your money back. I decided to try calling and, after a short automated menu system, I DID actually get to talk to a real human. He told me what happened and cleared my card for my stay in Vegas. STOOPID, STOOPID ME!

Had dinner with Nate (them Wisconsinites call it supper) at a buffet - thank you Nate. It was a great meal more for the company than the food, but we each found some dishes that we liked. We were there so long, I thought they were gonna charge us rent.

My batteries were doing good, so I decided to go look for some music to see if my Segway could still dance. Only place indoors was too crowded though, so I window shopped. Found a really nice hat store and this cute girl who looked straight out of the 70s, floppy hat an' all, had me try on a dozen or more hats and I had a good time. Didn't buy a hat, but glided out with a big ol' smile.

Back in my room. I hope I can go to sleep early so I can get up early enough to have a productive day at Surfaces. If I plan it right, I can get a few hours in before it's time to recharge my batteries. Then I can take a nap while they charge.

Hope to see some of you there.
