Replace them and then go to the supply house and give them to some young fella starting out that is really interested in the trade and give them to him as a gift. That is what I'm going to do with mine when I really don't want to do it anymore. Turning 75 next month it may come sooner than I would like.

I disagree. Try and sell tools, you get less than half brand new. Then the effort. Time doing the transaction. I’d explain to insurance company(adjuster) and compromise on a lower price. Say 12k$ in damage covered, 9k$ check. Or work something with a tool company for a transaction equivalent with receipts.

I got some talking smoke alarms, went off one day, wife dismisses it. I go check and there’s a foot high flame from the candle. I put it out. Another few times false alarm middle of night I wake up expecting something but nothing. Those were both replaced.

First things first! I'm glad you and your family are safe! Thank those lucky stars!
Shoot for a percentage buyout. If they don't go for it, yeah, replace them all and sell em'. Or maybe you can even take them back under warranty and get a full refund? Don't tell the store the plan in advance though. It might be construed as something not on the up and up. Eyes and ears are everywhere!

Here’s a picture of a smoke detector in a customers home I noticed was placed in the wrong spot. I forgot to tell them. Ceiling went up another 4’ in the picture. I have one on my nightstand I haven’t put up yet. Rather one inside the room as well.

I dont think its immoral one bit. You pay your insurance for exactly that reason, to protect your investments.
They would probably just cut you a check & you can do what you want with it. If you dont want the tools, use it for something else that you can use in your golden years. A nice trip, spoil some grandbabies, collage fund.....

It would be immoral for them to not pay you for what you been paying them to protect over xx years.

And mike has a great point. If they do want you to spend the entire sum on the tools, negotiate for a check.

Why the hell are you on here mike? You're in Vegas, go play. Jeesh:nooo:

Sorry to here this. My sisters neighbor had a fire in her condo. Smoke damage in my sisters unit. Make sure you get what's due to you. Who knows, maybe you'll get a second wind at 71 years old? Just kidding

    Yep, mine was last year.
Luckily our garage is 100’ from our house. Ours was a total loss.

And Roland’s Truck! You really think that its uncommon. With lightning around my area homes burn down and they flatten them.

It's a terrible thing but the absolute biggest thing is that nobody got hurt on any of them. Our tools, toys, & junk can be replaced.

This is a business transaction, it only becomes a moral / ethical thing if you're claiming items that did not get damaged. What you do with those insured tools is up to you.

Glad everyone is ok and best of luck with restoration process.
