im not a ceramic guy, but i had to demo out a bunch of tile in kitchens for vinyl and laminate.

ive seen cement board, hardy board, and alot of times 1/4 ply

why do some installers use plywood instead of cement board

I can't think of any good reason for putting 1/4" ply under ceramic?

There are a lot of bad reasons, if you're just lookin' for a list. ;)

So it's easy to Demo! I'm fine with it.

Did a demo this weekend, half the install was over Durock/cement board to bring to height of first layer of tile. It held well to slab and jackhammers were slow to bust up.

It's all about the bond, whoever did the job did good, even tile over tile held well. There were issues with crack suppression or lack thereof requiring replacement.
